A website that estimates how many layers of clothing to wear

Meet Vijith Quadros.

Vijith is 31 years old. He is from India but moved to Sweden 8 years ago to study engineering and has lived there since.

Vijith has mostly worked in technology startups and brief stints in a large Middle-Eastern airline, an Swedish autonomous driving company and the Swedish government.

This is his story building and running the website How many layers today.

What is the product?

My product is called howmanylayersidag.se.

It is a website that tells you how many layers of clothing to wear depending on the weather at your location.

The idea came from me playing field hockey outdoors. I’ve played this sport for a long time but especially in the autumn the wether in Sweden can get either really cold or really warm. This makes it kind of hard to know how to dress up for hockey.

I wanted to find an easier way to check this.

Launching

I started building in August of 2024 and the first version of the product went live on the 4th of September 2024.

Screenshot from a webpage. Consists of text, input field, and buttons. The primary text says: "How many layers should I wear today?"

I sent it to a few friends of mine and instantly people would love it or find it to be useless. There was no middle ground really. That made me realise that there might be something here 🙂

Getting to the first 100 users

It took me about 10 days to get to my first 100 users. I went to one of the professional communities I am a part of called ‘Nova Talent’ and asked them to try it. That really helped spreading the word.

Currently I have 11,400 users totally and average 600 users weekly.

Marketing

All the way I’ve bootstrapped the product promotion completely. Finding the right channels and forms of distribution have been challenging.

I wanted to get early feedback and resorted to TikTok, Instagram, and Threads.

This worked initially but I struggled to find people who were repeat users. After digging deeper, I realised that these users found it to be cool but didn’t face the pain point I was trying to solve.

I tried a few different styles of posting with demos and screenshots but nothing worked. I resorted to trying different ways to share the difficulty of figuring outfits based on the weather by spelling out my story as an immigrant in Sweden. An immigrant struggling to know how to wear the right outfits when it was 15 degrees outside (screenshot below). Something I had no previous experience with and even context to.

Sharing my story and product in a Facebook group

I’ve also done a bit of posting on Reddit - like this one:

The business model

There is no business model. I just wanted to start out by building something useful so I’m sticking to that.
